Some folks asked us recently what is a VoIP number so we decided to make some clarifications about the concept.
First of all for those unfamiliar with the definition of VoIP it stands for Voice over IP.
In the past (and still today in some regions) people used make telephone calls with their traditional telephone system which uses a copper cable network known as Public Switched Telephone Network or PSTN.
With the advent of internet some engineers devised a way to send telephone calls using the internet connections/cables/infrastructure instead of using the traditional PSTN, this has a few advantages over the old technology such as lower cost of international calls, higher voice quality and the possibility to make calls to and from computers or smartphones for free (as long as both devices are connected to internet). This technology is very flexible and goes beyond calls between phones, some examples of VoIP-based services are Skype, Viber and Whatsapp calls.
Lately many telecom companies have migrated most of their land line telephone customers from PSTN to VoIP because the cost of maintaining PSTN is higher and because of the added benefits for their customers.
So, with that in mind we can answer the original question of what is a VoIP phone number: for your land line it is the same as a normal telephone number, it is a way for the network to find a user/business/household in order to route calls from and to the people making the calls and if your home or business has been migrated to VoIP then you may either have keep your old number or received a new one from your telephony provider.
As for VoIP services such as Skype or Viber, each system has its own way to find users and route calls either with a username or using your mobile phone number for that purpose.
If you have more questions about this technology or how does it make your business grow feel free to ask in the comments, we will try our best to reply.
